As of today, Argan Oil cooperatives in Morocco is where the vast majority of Argan oil is produced. And knowing Argan oil has lots of Benefits for the skin, hair, lips, hands and nails..etc. the benefits of this organic oil are more than just skin deep. Because with LOYAL Argan, the production is creating a positive impact and empowering the women in this small region of South West Morocco. Producing one Liter of Argan oil in these Argan oil cooperatives is a very labor intensive process. And the Moroccan Berber women have relied on their traditional knowledge to extract the highest quality Argan oil for centuries.
Now combined with our team’s scientific knowledge, this collaboration results in even better Argan oil quality than ever before. We get the oil after pressing the Argan kernels, and in order to get to the kernels, women crack the nut open the traditional way between two stones. You may wonder why this cracking is not done using a machine. Well, let us tell you that Argan nuts are sixteen times harder than a hazelnut, thus ranking among the hardest in the world. This first stage of cracking the nuts open is the most difficult part of the process. Even machines designed to do this often fail. So the traditional way of cracking the Argan nuts remains the most effective way to get to the kernels. Among all the work done at the Argan oil cooperatives, this part of the process is the most time-consuming and explains why the oil is so expensive.
Case study: How this Argan oil cooperative benefits its members?
Tougasse is the name of one of the Argan oil cooperatives we work with, this cooperative was established on October 2003. The group of women who founded this cooperative wanted to do something to improve their family income and provide education to their children. Like most of the argan oil cooperatives, the women behind this cooperative used to produce Argan oil individually and sell it for unfair prices so the cooperative came to help them gather their production in an organized structure.
At the beginning the Cooperative was not welcomed by the men of the village who were unsure about this change in the women’s role even though those men were aware of the benefits of Argan oil since it had been used in the region for thousands of years. Progressively the cooperative began to reap the benefits of its members’ hard work and the men of the village started to gradually accept the new situation. There are now more than 70 women working at the Tougasse cooperative.
The women are benefiting not only financially but through improved social position, helping themselves build a sustainable life for themselves and their families in a male-dominated society. Among hundreds of Argan oil cooperatives, Tougasse, thanks the members hard work and premium quality production of Argan oil, is one of the very few cooperatives to hold the IGP Argan certification. This certification protects the collective rights of these women and ensures that they earn a fair price for their endeavours which in turn benefits their families and the entire village. This helps also this ethical and democratically-managed cooperative to continually grow and prosper.
